Prevention and Treatment of Tobacco Use:  
Brief Intervention Strategies for Health Care Providers

This program can be provided as a 1 hour or a 3.5 hour program.


PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
There is growing recognition of the important role health care providers play in assisting patients to stop using tobacco and in the prevention of tobacco use by young people. 
This program is designed to develop brief intervention skills for prevention and tobacco use cessation that health care providers can integrate into their routine encounters with patients. 
Specific topics include review of the roles of health care providers in tobacco use prevention and cessation, understanding the natural history of tobacco use, and discussion of brief intervention strategies. 

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:
- describe the role of health care providers in tobacco use prevention and cessation.
- describe prevalence and types of tobacco products utilized.
- describe the factors involved in the initiation, maintenance, and cessation of tobacco use
- discuss brief intervention strategies for prevention and for assisting patients to stop using tobacco.
- describe community efforts and resources to reduce the problem of tobacco use. (optional depending upon specific arrangements)

FACULTY:  
Michael J. Geboy, Ph.D.  Dr. Geboy is currently  Partnership Director of the Southwest Health Professions Education Center, Inc./VA Employee Education System, in Prescott Arizona. He is also past Chairperson of the National Advisory Committee on Tobacco Use for the Department of Veterans Affairs.  Previously, he was Clinical Associate Professor of Behavioral Science and Director of Academic Services at Georgetown University, School of Dentistry, and also taught in the School of Medicine. He has held faculty appointments at the University of Maryland, School of Nursing and School of Dentistry and at Temple University, School of Dentistry.  He was also visiting faculty at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.
His primary interest area is health behavior change, and he has published numerous articles in the professional literature as well as a textbook in this area.  Dr. Geboy was a peer reviewer for the 1996 AHCPR guideline on smoking cessation and was a member of a joint VA/Dept. of Defense workgroup creating a tobacco use counseling guideline for primary care for use in the federal services.

Dr. Geboy has also developed and conducted numerous smoking cessation programs including both group programs and individual counseling.  He has also conducted numerous workshops throughout the Country for health care providers on brief intervention counseling over the past 15 years.

Physicians, Dentists, Nurses, Dental Hygienists, Psychologists, and other interested health care providers

Continuing Education
This program can provide accredited education for physicians, nurses, dental professionals, psychologists and other mental health care providers.
