STAFF-RESIDENT
RELATIONSHIPS:
THE
BOUNDARY BETWEEN
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Boundary violations can and do occur in
the healthcare setting, producing adverse consequences for the agency, the
staff, the client, and the family member(s).
It is important for staff and the institution to be aware of boundary
issues, prevent violations, and develop healthy, well-defined boundaries between
staff and clients as well as with the clients family member(s).
Establishing healthy boundaries is a learning process as each staff
member defines and refines his or her personal and professional boundaries.
This learning process is usually a matter of balance rather than of being
a perfect staff member.
The
balance of ego boundaries includes the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual,
intellectual, and financial areas of life.
This interactive lecture-discussion program will explore the personal
characteristics and/or unmet ego/emotional needs of the staff that either
promote healthy boundaries or place the staff member at risk; the negative
and/or perceived positive consequences related to boundary crossing; the
motivation for the client to give gifts, money, compliments, etc.; the
balance of power wherein staff are vulnerable to boundary violation; and a
typical behavior pattern of staff, clients, and the family member when a
boundary violation is occurring. It
will also examine how to find the middle ground when it comes to caring and
doing too much for clients.
