Infantilization, Ageism and the Elderly
 

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:  How we interact and communicate with the elderly person influences his/her behavior and abilities.  The purpose of this presentation is to identify those behaviors and communications that lead to dependence and a decline in functioning and discuss alternative caregiver behaviors to promote independence and the maintenance of cognitive and physical abilities.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

FACULTY:  Michael J. Geboy, Ph.D. 

Dr. Geboy is currently Partnership Director of the Southwest Health Professions Education Center/EES, Prescott Center. Prior to joining the VA, he was Associate Professor of Behavioral Science at Georgetown University, School of Dentistry, and also taught in the School of Medicine.  He has had faculty appointments at the University of Maryland, School of Nursing, Temple University, the University of Texas at Tyler, and has also taught at Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland.  He has published numerous articles, chapters, and a textbook in the area of communication and health behavior change.
