Eating Disorders:
Overweight; Over Eating; Anorexia (10OE)

March 26, 2010
8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Prescott Resort
1500 Highway 69
Prescott, AZ

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Disordered eating in all its forms continues to impact tens of millions in the United States.  Food and weight are the objects of obsession in a culture that glorifies appearance.  Body shape and size along with eating habits and dieting strongly impact how one relates to self and others.  Images of the body, male and female, generate billions of dollars in product sales and revenue.  The message is loud and clear: “If you do not look like what you see in popular media, you are flawed.”  Ensuing body related shame often drives individuals to use food as a way to cope with uncomfortable emotion.  Emotional Eating, Binge Eating Disorder (BED), Bulimia and Anorexia are all possible outcomes when food is abused.  This presentation will focus on conceptualizing eating disorders from a Dialectical Behavior Therapy perspective, as well as highlighting the functional nature of the illness.  Specific attention will be given to the etiology and treatment of Emotional Eating and Binge Eating Disorder from nutritional and clinical standpoints.  Finally, as the prevalence of eating disorders in males seems to be on the rise, with males of all ages experiencing eating disorder symptoms rivaling females in severity, special focus will given on exploring how to assess for and recognize eating disorders in men. This program is aimed at the intermediate skill level.
