BEHAVIORAL HEALTH ETHICS; and
STRENGTHENING EGO BOUNDARIES
(10EI3)

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:  This program will begin with a discussion of current behavioral health ethics and standards for the State of Arizona, as well as State law requirement applicable to licensed professionals. There will be an overview of minimum practice standards in regard to documentation in clinical records, as well as discussions of the most frequent occurring problematic areas wherein licensed professions experience ethical dilemma difficulties leading to the highest number of practice violations.

As part of the ethical commitment to our profession, mental health clinicians understand the importance of developing, nurturing, and maintaining health ego boundary between themselves and their clients. In the field of mental health, clinicians put into practice their professional skills, clinical techniques, compassionate empathy, and caring concern for clients. Inherent to serving clients in this capacity, various stresses can “bring out” behaviors in us that leave us vulnerable to potential Boundaries violations.  This training will provide models for clinicians to develop, nurture, strengthen, and maintain healthy ego boundaries, to insure prevention of Boundaries violations.

This program is aimed at the intermediate skill level.

Wayne P. Sisson, M.A., is currently Associate Director of Southwest Health Professions Education Center, Inc./VA Employee Education System, Prescott Center (SEC/EES) at the Northern Arizona VA Healthcare System in Prescott, Arizona.  Prior to joining that program, he was an addiction therapist at the VA Medical Center's inpatient Substance Abuse Treatment Program from 1980 to 1994.  He was also the program director and addiction therapist at La Casita, Inc., a residential alcohol treatment center in Tucson, Arizona from 1978 to 1980, with a total of 18 years experience in substance abuse treatment.  Mr. Sisson has presented numerous continuing education programs on staff-patient boundaries, substance abuse, co-dependency, depression, and communication skills.
