FORENSIC DENTISTRY:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Recent history has demonstrated the significance of the involvement of the expertise of forensic dentistry the aftermath of mass disasters, including the dental identification of missing children and adults. No one will forget the World Trade Center of September 11th, 2001 and the enormous task involved in the identification of victims. This program will provide insight into the many aspects of forensic dentistry and the multiple roles that dentists have as part of an investigative team. Dentists play a large role in the field of forensics due our training, detail oriented profession, as well as our ability to use specialized equipment.  Mass disasters require enormous man power of competent professional personnel to help in the investigative process. This program will discuss the five major areas that forensic dentistry is broken into: Human dental identification, Mass disaster human dental identification, Bitemark analysis, Human abuse seen in dentistry, and dental-legal issues. 

FACULTY: William J. Baldwin, Jr., DDS, FAAHD, DABSCD, is currently a staff dentist at the Chalmers P. Wylie VA Ambulatory Care Center in Columbus, Ohio.  He is a Fellow in the American Association of Hospital Dentists, and a Diplomate in the American Board of Special Care Dentistry.  Dr. Baldwin currently holds the board position of Vice President of the American Association of Hospital Dentists VA representative.  He is currently working for the Franklin County Coroner’s Office in Columbus, Ohio; and is a core team member of the Ohio Dental Association Mass Disaster Team. Dr. Baldwin has been a Forensic Odontology Consultant for the Franklin County Coroner’s Office since 2000. He was called to action in New York City as an Ohio Mass Disaster Team member to join in the identification process of the World Trade Center event.  Dr. Baldwin’s forensic training includes the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology Mass Disaster Training, National Transportation Safety Board Forensic Anthropology, the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner training in Human Identification, numerous airport mock disaster drills, and Haz-Mat training. He graduated from dental school in 1999, completed a General Practice Residency at the Ohio State University in 2000, and has been an attending for the GPR in the operating room of the Ohio State Medical Center since 2000.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:  At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • describe the multiple facets of Mass Disaster investigations and the role that the dental team plays,

  • discuss the steps involved in human identification,

  • describe the warning signs of human abuse and what our roles are as health care providers,

  • identify how to get the training needed and what types of training are needed to become a forensic odontologist,

  • describe what is involved in the dental team’s response to bioterrorism,

  • identify how to protect oneself in the dental-legal realm.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: Dentists, Dental Hygienists, and other Dental Professionals.

1:30 PM - 2:30 PM             Basic Introduction to Human Bite Marks, and Human Abuse

2:30 PM - 2:45 PM             Afternoon Break

2:45 PM - 4:30 PM             Introduction into Bioterrorism, and Dental–Legal Issues

CONTINUING EDUCATION: The Southwest Health Professions Education Center, Inc. (SEC) certifies this program for 6 contact hours.  A certificate of attendance will be awarded. 


The Department of Veterans Affairs, Employee Education System is an ADA CERP Recognized Provider. ADA CERP is a service of the American Dental Association to assist dental professionals in identifying quality providers of continuing dental education. ADA CERP does not approve or endorse individual courses or instructors, nor does it imply acceptance of credit hours by boards of dentistry.

Continuing Education Credit: The Department of Veterans Affairs, Employee Education System designates this activity for 6 continuing education credits. 

REGISTRATION: Registration fee is $190.00 for dentists, $125.00 for all other dental professionals.  Fee for full-time VA employees is $18.00.  Includes continental breakfast, break refreshments, and course material. Credit card registrations may be faxed to (928) 776-6137. Registration is not complete until payment received.  Space is limited so please register early.  Refunds, minus a $15 processing fee, will be made until 3 days prior to the program.  No refunds will be made after this date.
