PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This program on gambling addiction recovery will provide an overview of the assessment process, the treatment plan development, and methods of treatment for compulsive gamblers and their families.  The program will discuss the types of gamblers, characteristics of a gambler, the similarities between gambling addiction and substance abuse, and the stages, progression, and pathology of gambling addiction.  It will discuss gambling issues related to family, youth, women, and the elderly, as well as problems caused by gambling in the workplace and online gambling.  The program will cover the recovery process, type of treatments (i.e., residential, outpatient, self-help), as well as emphasize the positive outcomes of treatment.  This program is aimed at the intermediate skill level.

FACULTY:  Bobbe McGinley, MA, MBA, LISAC, NCGC II, has worked with the population of problem gamblers and their families for the past twelve years. She has developed an out-patient treatment program for recovery from gambling addiction. This treatment center currently has four facilities. This treatment model focuses on the client, as well as the family, including children/adolescents.  She recently developed a 30-day residential treatment program for treatment of gambling addiction for Calvary Center, in Phoenix, Arizona. Ms. McGinley is frequently invited to present on the topic of problem gambling to many different industries throughout the country, and she serves as a consultant to the automotive industry, to treatment centers, and to school districts throughout Arizona. She has published several articles on the topic of providing assessment and treatment to problem gamblers and their families. Ms. McGinley has had a lifelong association with the Armed Forces, providing training, and offering treatment to active duty men and women who present with gambling problems. She is an active volunteer in the community; and is on various agency committees providing out reach, as well as working to inform and support other clinical professionals about gambling addiction recovery.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:  At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • identify problem gamblers and their issues,

  • identify tools of assessment for use with problem gamblers and their families,

  • utilize treatment tools which are effective in assisting problem gamblers and
    their families in individual therapy, as well as group therapy,

  • discuss methods to deal with the unique financial and legal issues faced by
    problem gamblers and their families as they enter recovery.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:   Psychologists, social workers, mental health therapists, addiction therapists, psychiatric nurses, chaplains, and other mental health professionals.

CONTINUING EDUCATION: The Southwest Health Professions Education Center, Inc. (SEC) certifies this program for 6 contact hours.  A certificate of attendance will be awarded. 

[ APA ] -- The Southwest Health Professions Education Center, Inc. (SEC) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SEC maintains responsibility for the program and its content.  This program provides 6 CE credits

[ ASWB ] -- VA Employee Education System, Provider Number 1040, is approved as a provider for continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards 400 South Ridge Parkway, Suite B, Culpeper, VA 22701. www.aswb.org. ASWB Approval Period: 4/7/07 - 4/1/10. Social workers should contact their regulatory board to determine course approval. Social workers will receive 6 continuing education clock hours in participating in this course.

[ NBCC ] – The VA Employee Education System is approved by the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) to offer continuing education accreditation for National Certified and Licensed Counselors.  We adhere to NBCC Continuing Education Guidelines.  This program is approved for 6 contact hours.  Provider #5927.

[ CNE ] -- The Southwest Health Professions Education Center, Inc. (SEC) is a provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, provider # CEP 11270.  This program is approved for 6 contact hours.

REGISTRATION: Registration is $125.00. Fee for VA employees is $8.00. Includes continental breakfast and course material.  Credit card registrations may be faxed to (928) 776-6137.  Registration is not complete until payment received.  Space is limited so please register early.  Refunds, minus a $15 processing fee, will be made until 3 days prior to the program.  No refunds will be made after this date. There will a $20.00 processing fee for any returned checks.  Confirmation letters will not be sent
