PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This program will provide an introduction to pronunciation of Spanish vowels and consonants, as well as the basic pronunciation of dental terminology. Participants will practice correct pronunciation of Spanish names, dental personnel, commands, and learn some cultural aspects of Spanish-speaking patients. The audience will practice questions that are asked of dental patients, and will practice soliciting general information from Spanish-speaking dental patients. The participants will learn several key expressions which will enable them to better communicate with their Spanish-speaking patients.

FACULTY: Orlando Martinez, B.A., M.A. currently teaches Spanish at Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona. He has produced materials to be used by dentists and their staffs and has held a seminar for dentists at the Texas Dental Convention in San Antonio, Texas. Mr. Martinez is semi-retired after teaching for 40 years in Arizona and California. He has taught at different levels including high school and college. Mr. Martinez has led college students on summer school studies at the University of Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • accurately pronounce dental terminology in Spanish,

  • identify how to ask questions and solicit information from Spanish-speaking dental patients,

  • communicate at a basic level with Spanish-speaking patients.

INTENDED AUDIENCE: Dentists, Dental Hygienists, and other Dental Professionals

CE STATEMENTS The Southwest Health Professions Education Center, Inc. (SEC) certifies this program for 3 contact hours.  A certificate of attendance will be awarded.

The Department of Veterans Affairs, Employee Education System is an ADA-CERP Recognized Provider.  The formal continuing education programs of this sponsor are accepted by AGD for Fellowship/Mastership credit.  The current term of acceptance extends from December 2005-December 2009.  This program has been approved for 3 contact hours.

REGISTRATION FEES: Registration fee is $80.00 for dentists, $55.00 for all other dental professionals.  Fee for full-time VA employees is $11.00.  Includes break refreshments and course material.  Credit card registrations may be faxed to (928) 776-6137.  Visa, Mastercard, and American Express accepted. Refunds, minus a $15 processing fee, will be made until 3 days prior to the program.  No refunds will be made after this date. There will a $20.00 processing fee for any returned checks.  Confirmation letters will not be sent.
