PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Healthy staff-patient boundaries are an important element in effective practice. Nevertheless, staff-patient boundary violations often occur in healthcare settings. This program is designed for people who work directly with patients and their families. It will provide participants with an understanding of professional boundaries and dual relationships, and their impact on patients, staff and the health care institution. There will be discussion of the difference between personal and professional relationships, warning signs, and risk factors, as well as strategies for maintaining healthy boundaries. Vignettes and small group work will be utilized as a way to analyze potential boundary dilemmas.FACULTY: Nancy Dillon, PhD, RN, CNS, is the Nurse Executive for the Minnesota Department of Human Services, State Operated Services.
