THE ACTUAL MOMENT IN PSYCHOTHERAPY:

AN EXPERIENTIAL APPROACH TO USING
EXISTENTIAL-HUMANISTIC PSYCHOTHERAPY

November 20, 2009
8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Radisson Poco Diablo Resort
1752 S. Highway 179
Sedona, AZ

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: How does the actual “moment” in psychotherapy foster change in the individual? This program will discuss and introduce the experience of the actual moment in psychotherapy and how this awareness becomes the pivotal point of change in psychotherapy. The foundation of this form of therapy is based upon the fifty-years of clinical work of founding president of Humanistic Psychology, James F.T. Bugental, Ph.D., and the overall philosophy and psychology of Existential-Humanistic and Transpersonal psychology. Dr. Heery will examine how to identify the actual moment through experiential demonstrations and identify resistance to working with the actual moment. Treatment strategies and adaptations to various populations will be practiced and reviewed from case vignettes.  There will be a focus on the application of these principles in the individual and group therapy settings.

This program is geared toward the intermediate to advanced skill level.  It is also experiential in nature, as participants will be invited to practice the techniques with each other in small groups.

FACULTY: Myrtle Heery, Ph.D., is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with over three decades of experience in private practice working with individuals, couples, and families and leading groups.  She is Director of the International Institute for Humanistic Studies, where she conducts national and international trainings in existential-humanistic individual and group psychotherapy in Canada, Mexico, Russia and Europe to a variety of mental health providers including but not limited to psychologists, marriage family therapists, and social workers.  Dr. Heery is an Associate Professor of In-Depth Psychology, Sonoma State University, Rohnert Park, California, and adjunct faculty at Institute of Transpersonal Psychology, Palo Alto, California, teaching group psychotherapy.  She has studied and co-led trainings with James F. T. Bugental, Ph.D., first president of the Humanistic Psychology Association for three decades.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • identify and use the basic concepts of Existential-Humanistic and Transpersonal psychotherapy,

  • deepen therapeutic work by recognizing and utilizing the actual moment of psychotherapy,

  • identify and experience an awareness of the actual moment with yourself and others,

  • understand how the actual moment informs and deepens treatment with individuals and groups,
