PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Mental health practitioners have began to notice that an increasing number of clients have chosen complementary or alternative medicine (CAM) techniques which may have powerful effects on the mind and body. Whether it is acupuncture, Ayurvedic medicine, homeopathy, or aromatherapy, or any of a host of others. Research has revealed that more than 40% of the US population engages in such complementary or alternative techniques--often without reporting these to their mental health practitioners or physician. In this program, participants will be introduced to the major types of CAM systems and techniques, what research has revealed about them, and how to work with clients who are using such techniques. In addition, the program will cover techniques from the mind-body-spirit realm which you, as a clinician, may want to use with your clients to augment the effectiveness of your therapy. This program is aimed at the intermediate skill level. FACULTY: Linda Scott, Ph.D., M.Ac., teaches psychology at Hood College in Frederick, Maryland, and is a Maryland state-licensed and nationally certified acupuncturist. She maintains a private practice in acupuncture. Dr. Scott has twice been awarded the Mortar Board Excellence in Teaching award.
