PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This program will provide an overview of current ethical issues in the field of mental health and psychology. There will be discussion of the process of ethical decision-making related to ethical judgment. Problems in the decision-making process that might create a “slippery slope” and increase risk ethical problems will be explored. There will be a summary of the mission and operational policies of the Arizona Board of Psychological Examiners and the Arizona Board of Behavioral Health Examiners, especially in relation to the complaint process. The program will educate psychologists and other mental health professionals about practical ethical concerns, and assist psychologists and mental health professionals in developing a course of action that will facilitate handling of a board complaint in an effective manner. A review of recent complaints and their outcomes will alert practitioners about the ethical issues which are of concern in current practice. This program is aimed at intermediate to advanced skill level. FACULTY: Fred Wechsler, PhD, PsyD, ABPP, is currently the Director of Clinical Training at Argosy University/Phoenix. He was the Director of Clinical Training at Midwestern University in Glendale, Arizona. Dr. Wechsler is a former Arizona Psychological Association Liaison to Arizona Board of Psychological Examiners. He was an Adjunct Clinical Faculty at Wright State University School of Medicine and School of Professional Psychology. Dr. Wechsler was employed at HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital where he managed a pain program. He also had a private practice. He is a Diplomate in Clinical Psychology, American Board of Professional Psychology. Dr. Wechsler was a staff psychologist at the VA Medical Center in Dayton Ohio and was an Intern at the VA Medical Center in Louisville. He received his PhD in Counseling from the University of Georgia, and his PsyD in Clinical Psychology from Wright State University. Dr. Wechsler has presented numerous papers at regional, national and international conferences. Lawrence M. Sideman, Ph.D., is currently a Professor of Clinical Psychology at Argosy University, The American School of Professional Psychology, in Phoenix, Arizona. He is licensed by the State of Arizona as a Psychologist, a Professional Counselor (LPC) and as an Independent Substance Abuse Counselor (LISAC). He served over five years on the Ethics Committee of the Arizona Psychological Association and is currently the Chair of the Arizona Counselors Association Ethics Committee. Dr. Sideman has over 25 years of direct clinical experience. Among his many professional endeavors, he was instrumental in developing and overseeing practicum and internship training programs at TASC (Treatment Assessment Screening Center), an outpatient behavioral health agency, where he provided clinical supervision for doctoral level and masters level practicum and internship students while maintaining the positions of Clinical Director and Assistant Executive Director. Dr. Sideman is published in several professional journals and has presented various research papers at National Psychological Conventions. He has designed and implemented a substance abuse education/prevention program for university athletic teams and is the past Director of Training for the Arizona Psychology Training Consortium. He maintains a private practice in Phoenix and is the clinical Director of the Maricopa County Sherriff’s Office ALPHA Program. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: As of March 31, 2007, there were 9,773 children in out-of-home care in Arizona because of child abuse and/or neglect. In 2000, seventy children died in Arizona due to some type of violence. These deaths accounted for more than the combined childhood deaths related to heart disease, asthma, diabetes, metabolic diseases and cancer. Fifty children died in Arizona directly related to some form of maltreatment in 2005. This program is designed to give practitioners an understanding of the child abuse and neglect reporting laws, how to identify various forms of abuse (physical, emotional, and sexual), neglect (physical and emotional), and the pathological developmental pathways that result from these various forms of child maltreatment. Characteristics of both the child victims of maltreatment and those who perpetrate the abuse and neglect will be reviewed. This program is designed to meet the continuing education licensure requirements for both masters and doctoral practitioners. This program is aimed at the intermediate skill level. FACULTY: John J. Toma, Ph.D., is licensed in the State of Arizona as a Psychologist. He is currently in private practice and sole proprietor for Biltmore Evaluation and Treatment Services LLC. Dr. Toma’s practice consists primarily of forensic evaluations for the Court. He is a mental health expert for the Superior Court in Maricopa County and has completed evaluations for the Courts in Pima, Pinal, and Yavapai counties. He provides a number of criminal and family court evaluations, including: sanity, competency, risk for violence (both physical and sexual), child abuse, mitigation, aggravation, and neuropsychological. Dr. Toma also provides civil court evaluations (fitness for duty, sexual harassment, independent medical examinations, etc.) as well as completing, with adjunct staff, several other types of psychological evaluations. Prior to independent practice, Dr. Toma worked in the pre-and post-trial forensic programs at the Arizona State Hospital for seven years. He has held the positions of Director of Training and Assistant Faculty at Argosy University for two years, and worked as a Social Worker/District Manager in child protective services for over ten years. Dr. Toma is committed to training and currently supervises and still teaches pre-and post-doctoral psychology students in forensic and clinical psychology. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This program is designed to enhance clinician skills when working with diverse populations and increase one's level of understanding of what constitutes culture. Participants will increase their awareness of the impact of their own background and experiences with regard to personal assumptions (conscious and subconscious) about myriad issues and sensitivity to what is important to the individual / family being provided services in a professional venue. This program is aimed at the intermediate skill level. FACULTY: Dawn Malone, MSSA, MSUS, LCSW, LISAC, LISW, SAP, is currently a social worker at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona. She received her Master of Social Science Administration degree from Case Western Reserve University and her Master of Science in Urban Studies Economic Development from Cleveland State University. Ms. Malone has been working in the Human Services field for fifteen years in the non-profit sector, as an independent contractor/consultant in the private sector, and within the Federal government. She has also served as an adjunct professor of urban studies and social work and as a faculty field liaison for Cleveland and Phoenix area institutions of higher learning. Ms. Malone has extensive experience as a researcher, and a workshop trainer in the areas of supervisor/personnel trainings, proposal writing, program development and evaluation, ethics, cultural diversity, counseling theories, and strategies for working with chemically dependent family systems. She also served for nine years as a Case Methods Presentation evaluator for the Governing Board of Chemical Dependency Professionals in Ohio. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:
