REVIEW OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: This training program will begin with an overview of the endocrine system, updating nurse practitioners and nurses on what is new in research in endocrinology; new findings for clinical practice; and how the endocrine system interact with other disease processes. More specific topics of discussion will include: hypogonadism and testosterone replacement, thyroid diseases, parathyroid diseases, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome. The program will conclude with a brief summary of other endocrine diseases, that nurse practitioners and nurses should be aware of, for providing a more well-rounded treatment.

FACULTY: Uwe W. Fohlmeister, MD, is currently a physician in Primary and Specialty Care at the Bob Stump VA Medical Center in Prescott, Arizona, where he specializes in internal medicine.  He has fourteen years of VA employment, and twenty years of military service. Dr. Fohlmeister attended medical school at the University of Minnesota and completed his Internal Medicine Residency in 1978. He completed a Fellowship in Endocrinology and Metabolism in 1978.  Dr. Fohlmeister is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and in Endocrinology and Metabolism. 

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:  At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • identify the relevant issues in treatment surrounding endocrinology,

  • discuss new research related to the clinical practice of endocrinology,

  • identify how the endocrine system interacts with other disease processes such as hypogonadism and testosterone replacement, thyroid diseases, parathyroid diseases, diabetes, and metabolic syndrome.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:  Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, and Nurses.

CONTINUING EDUCATION: The Southwest Health Professions Education Center, Inc. (SEC) certifies this program for 4 contact hours.  A certificate of attendance will be awarded.

[ CME ] -- The VA Employee Education System designates this educational activity for a maximum of 4 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s) TM.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

[ CNE ] -- The Southwest Health Professions Education Center, Inc. (SEC) is a provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, provider # CEP 11270.  This program is approved for 4 contact hours.

REGISTRATION: The registration fee is $45.00. There is no registration fee for full-time VA employees, but pre-registration is requiredIncludes course material. Credit card registrations may be faxed to (928) 776-6137.  Registration is not complete until payment received. Space is limited so please register early. Refunds, minus a $15 processing fee, will be made until thee days prior to the program.  No refunds will be made after this date.  There will a $20.00 processing fee for any returned checks.
