USING ELEMENTS OF

DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY
TO WORK MORE EFFECTIVELY WITH BORDERLINE PERSONALITY DISORDER CLIENTS

August 14, 2009
8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Prescott Resort Conference Center
1500 Highway 69
Prescott, AZ

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a treatment developed by Marcia Linehan, Ph.D. for clients traditionally diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD).   Individuals with a Borderline diagnosis have often become stigmatized by mental health systems as “difficult” due to what appears to be extremes in mood and behavior, suicidal and para-suicidal gestures and frequent hospitalizations. Dr. Linehan has looked closely at this and reconceptualized the diagnosis as a ‘pervasive disorder of the emotion regulation system”. This program will look closer at this reconceptualization of BPD to help people see that what is often seen as negative behaviors are actually an individual’s desperate attempt to re-regulate and alleviate some pain and misery and that these behaviors have been learned in the absence of more effective skills. This program will also explore Dialectical Behavior Therapy in more detail and see how it addresses the issues faced by individuals with BPD and the people who try to help them.  By looking at the theoretical underpinnings of this treatment (a unique combination of  behavior therapy, Zen principles such as mindfulness, and dialectical philosophy) as well as some of the main structural components and tools of DBT, participants will learn ways to more effectively work with challenging clients and avoid power struggles and the frustrations which often lead to burn out. This program is aimed at being accessible for clinicians at all skill levels.

FACULTY:  Alisa Kriegel, PhD, is currently in private practice and serves as an Adjunct Professor for Argosy University in Phoenix, Arizona. Over the past 20 years she has worked in a broad spectrum of mental health settings including inpatient hospitals, psychiatric day programs, school-based mental health, outpatient clinics and substance abuse treatment facilities in New York and California.  Recently she worked for San Mateo County’s behavioral health system as their first Training Director; prior to that she ran their well-regarded Intern Training Program.  In 2001 she received training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy and helped begin a DBT program in San Mateo where she worked with clients and colleagues using DBT until 2008. She has provided training and consultation in DBT to individuals and mental health systems throughout Northern California.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:  At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • discuss prejudices and stigma surrounding Borderline Personality Disorder,

  • identify prominent characteristics of Borderline Personality Disorder and how DBT addresses the prominent issues,

  • discuss Marsha Linehan’s Biosocial Theory of Borderline Personality Disorder,

  • identify the characteristics and patterns associated with Emotional Dysregulation and how to use this with clients,

  • discuss the three main treatment/philosophies which are cornerstone of Dialectical Behavior Therapy Treatment: Dialectics, Behavior Therapy & Mindfulness,

  • discuss components or DBT treatment and skills which can increase the effectiveness of work with challenging clients.
