CHILD ABUSE AND NEGLECT:
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: As of March 31, 2007, there were 9,773 children in out-of-home care in Arizona because of child abuse and/or neglect. These deaths accounted for more than the combined childhood deaths related to heart disease, asthma, diabetes, metabolic diseases and cancer. Fifty children died in Arizona directly related to some form of maltreatment in 2005. This program is designed to give practitioners an understanding of the child abuse and neglect reporting laws, how to identify various forms of abuse (physical, emotional, and sexual), neglect (physical and emotional), and the pathological developmental pathways that result from these various forms of child maltreatment. Characteristics of both the child victims of maltreatment and those who perpetrate the abuse and neglect will be reviewed.
