RECOVERY INITIATIVE:
EVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICES IN MENTAL HEALTH
(08RI)

October 24, 2008
8:00 AM - 4:30 PM
Crowne Plaza Hotel - North Phoenix
2532 W. Peoria Ave.
Phoenix, AZ

Program Description:  Recent developments in research on mental illness and changes in treatment modalities including pharmaceuticals and managed care are altering the realities of mental illness. Once a near hopeless and devastating condition, today mental illness has a much better prognosis, with recovering person integrating and functioning within the larger society. The President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health calls for transforming the mental health system so that it becomes “consumer and family driven” and “recovery focused”. The recovery focus stresses hope, empowerment, increased autonomy, and the expectation that persons who have experienced serious mental illnesses will be afforded full opportunity to participate in the social and vocational activities of the community. There will be an review of the background for this call for transformation and will lay out how this transformation of the system is expected to change our approach to the treatment of persons with mental illness. This presentation addresses overcoming stigma, recognizing the contributions of contemporary consumers, and addressing how we can better value the gifts of persons with mental illness, as we facilitate their reintegration into the larger society. This program is aimed at the intermediate skill level.

The American with Disabilities Act, Supreme Court Olmstead decision, and the President's New freedom Commission on Mental Health report solidified community integration as a right of people with psychiatric disabilities.  This program will present current research on recovery and community integration of persons with serious mental illnesses, discuss principles for promoting community integration, and present research on the effectiveness of community integration interventions, and information on emerging innovative approaches. This program is aimed at the intermediate to advanced skill level.
