PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: [ AM ] -- AN UPDATE ON COMMONLY PRESCRIBED MEDICATIONS: PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS FOR DENTAL PROFESSIONALS This program will provide a review of the 20 most commonly prescribed medications taken by clients treated in the oral health care environment. Drug interactions, popular drugs in the media and new drugs in dentistry will be discussed. [ PM ] -- PRESCRIPTION AND OTC DRUGS USED FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASE AND RELATED DENTAL PRACTICE CONSIDERATIONS This second segment of the program will provide oral health care professionals with current information about the safe management of clients taking selected prescription and OTC drugs for cardiovascular disease. Specific course content will focus on indications and contraindications for the use of anticoagulant, anti-platelet, and herbal medications. Tests used to assess bleeding risk will be described. Oral side effects and dental drug interactions will be presented.
FACULTY: Ann Eshenaur Spolarich, RDH, PhD, is an internationally recognized author and speaker on pharmacology and the care of medically complex patients. She has given over 750 lectures at professional meetings and universities throughout the United States and five foreign countries. She has published over 60 papers, 6 chapters in dental hygiene textbooks, and is a member of several journal editorial review boards. Currently, Dr. Spolarich is a consultant to the National Center for Dental Hygiene Research, Course Director for Clinical Medicine and Pharmacology at the Arizona School of Dentristry and Oral Health, and teaches pharmacology in the Audiology Department at the Arizona School of Health Sciences. She is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Southern California Dental School, as well as a Clinical Instructor on the Dean’s Faculty at the University of Maryland Dental School. In addition to teaching, Dr. Spolarich is an independent contractor, providing research and educational consulting services to both private and professional organizations. Dr. Spolarich practices dental hygiene part-time in Arizona and in Maryland.

describe the mechanism of action of drugs used to manage hypertension, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, myocardial infarction and stroke. identify prescription drugs and herbal supplements that cause an increased risk for bleeding. discuss how to reduce the risk of bleeding complications associated with dental procedures in clients taking prescription and herbal medications.
Prescription and OTC Drugs Used for the Management of Cardiovascular Disease and Related Dental Practice Considerations
identify and discuss commonly prescribed medications taken by clients treated in the oral health care setting. identify common drug interactions of significance to dental professionals. discuss new research findings that impact current recommendations for antibiotic premedication. list several new dental drugs and discuss their indications for use in practice.

(SEC) certifies this program for 6 contact hours. A certificate of attendance will be awarded. The Department of Veterans Affairs, Employee Education System is an ADA-CERP Recognized Provider. The formal continuing education programs of this sponsor are accepted by AGD for Fellowship/Mastership credit. The current term of acceptance extends from December 2005 - December 2009. This program has been approved for 6 contact hour(s). REGISTRATION: Registration fee is $175.00 for dentists, $114.00 for all other dental professionals. Fee for full-time VA employees is $18.00. Includes continental breakfast, break refreshments, and course material. Credit card registrations may be faxed to (928) 776-6137. Registration is not complete until payment received.
