PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Motivational Interviewing (MI) originated in the treatment of substance use disorders. Since then, it is increasingly being used to help people with a wide range of psychological problems. This program will cover principles, techniques & strategies of Motivational Interviewing, as well as present novel applications of MI in behavioral health practice. It will cover the interplay between external and internal motivation.  There will be discussion of the use of MI with anxiety, PTSD, OCD, depression, self harm behaviors, eating disorders, pathological gambling, schizophrenia, and dual diagnosis. The program will address the interpersonal style of the helper, MI interaction techniques, and helping strategies. This program is aimed at the intermediate skill level.

FACULTY: Lawrence M. Sideman, Ph.D., is currently an Associate Professor of Clinical Psychology and the Director of Practicum Training at Argosy University, The American School of Professional Psychology in Phoenix, Arizona. He is licensed by the State of Arizona as a Psychologist, a Professional Counselor (LPC) and as an Independent Substance Abuse Counselor (LISAC).  He is a member of the American Psychological Association and served over five years on the Ethics Committee of the Arizona Psychological Association. Dr. Sideman is currently the Chair of the Arizona Counselors Association Ethics Committee and serves on its Board of Directors. Dr. Sideman has over 25 years of direct clinical experience and amongst his many professional endeavors, he was instrumental in developing and overseeing practicum and internship training programs at TASC (Treatment Assessment Screening Center), an outpatient behavioral health agency where he provided clinical supervision for doctoral level and masters level practicum and internship students while maintaining the positions of Clinical Director and Assistant Executive Director. Dr. Sideman is published in several professional journals and has presented various research papers at National Psychological Conventions. He has designed and implemented a substance abuse education/prevention program for university athletic teams and is the past Director of Training for the Arizona Psychology Training Consortium. He maintains a private practice in Phoenix. 

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:  At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to: 

  • identify ways to use MI principles, techniques & strategies to treat common patient presenting problems,

  • generate increased empathy for clients, who are “resistant” to change,

  • identify helper behaviors that enhance motivation to change.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:  Psychologists, social workers, mental health therapists, addiction therapists, psychiatric nurses, chaplains, and other mental health professionals.

CONTINUING EDUCATION:  The Southwest Health Professions Education Center, Inc. (SEC) certifies this program for 6 contact hours.  A certificate of attendance will be awarded. 

The Southwest Health Professions Education Center, Inc. (SEC) is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. SEC maintains responsibility for the program and its content.  This program provides 6 CE credits.

VA Employee Education System, Provider Number 1040, is approved as a provider for social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), (1-800-225-6880) through the Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program.  VA Employee Education System maintains responsibility for the program.  Social workers will receive 6 continuing education clock hours in participating in this course.

The Southwest Health Professions Education Center, Inc. (SEC) is a provider approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, provider # CEP 11270.  This program is approved for 6 contact hours.

Registration: Registration fee is $109.00.  Fee for full-time VA employees is $18.00.  Includes continental breakfast, break refreshments, and course material. Credit card registrations may be faxed to (928) 776-6137.  Registration is not complete until payment received. Space is limited so please register early. Refunds, minus a $10 processing fee, will be made until thee days prior to the program.  No refunds will be made after this date.  There will a $15.00 processing fee for any returned checks.  Confirmation letters will not be sent Confirmation letters will not be sent.
