Motivational Interviewing:
Striving for Personal Change in
Behavioral Health & Medical Care Units
(10MI2)

June 16, 2010
8:00 AM - 11:30 AM
Carl T. Hayden VAMC, ACC West
650 E. Indian School Rd.
Phoenix, AZ  85021

Co-sponsored by Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center, Education Department

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Motivational interviewing (MI) has its roots in the field of addictions. However, the successful application of this counseling technique has expanded to a wide variety of applications in both behavioral health and medical settings. Focusing on patient motivation for change, this unique approach uses a listening, directing, and guiding approach in a patient-centered manner. Through the use of accurate empathy, reflection, and patient empowerment the provider using MI is allowed to focus on collaborative relationships with the patient, thereby reducing ambivalence and promoting change talk – which is the basis for successful behavior change. The “MI” approach acknowledges that the decision for behavior change begins with the patient. In contrast to the struggle providers often face when working with patient resistance, MI provides an alternative approach that decreases patient resistance to change, while facilitating patient-motivated behavior change. MI has been shown through multiple research studies, as well as clinical applications, to be an effective approach in assisting providers and their patients in the management of chronic behavioral health and medical conditions.  Numerous opportunities will be provided to encourage specific application of MI principles in participant’s clinical work. The program format will include a combination of lecture, clinical illustrations, role plays, and other applied exercises designed to increase participant understanding of both the theory and practice of MI and its relevance to their work environment. This program will cover an introduction to “MI”, and examine the unique style and strategies of this model.

FACULTY: Darren Calhoun, PhD, was initially trained in Motivational Interviewing in 1997. His area of focus is in research and the clinical application of Motivational Interviewing in patients with chronic medical conditions such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease as well as in the behavioral health areas of depression, substance abuse and smoking cessation. He is a Senior Research Fellow and Director of the Phoenix Field office of MedStar Health Research Institute in Phoenix Arizona. He is working on the Strong Heart Study; a large multi-state epidemiological study of cardiovascular disease and diabetes among American Indians, which is funded by the National Heart Lung & Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.  Dr. Calhoun is also currently a member of the team of providers in the “High Intensity Diabetes Clinic” at the Carl T Hayden VA. Dr. Calhoun has conducted research using Motivational Interviewing and has written on its effectiveness in addressing behavior change associated with improved long-term health outcomes for individuals with a variety of mental health and medical conditions. With over 13 years of experience in the use of Motivational Interviewing he has lectured and provided trainings on the history, application, research, and clinical effectiveness of Motivational Interviewing at local, regional and national meetings.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES:  At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • describe the basic concepts of Motivational Interviewing (MI), and understand how this model promotes behavior change by establishing a collaborative therapeutic alliance, drawing out the patient’s own internal motivation for change,

  • recognize common therapeutic approaches that may inadvertently increase patient resistance to change,

  • implement strategies that decrease patient resistance and promote lasting behavior change,

  • discuss the broad-based application of MI to multiple areas of mental & medical health care including chronic healthcare conditions, addictive behaviors, depression, and treatment adherence.

INTENDED AUDIENCE:  Physicians, psychologists, social workers, mental health therapists, addiction therapists, nurses, physicians, caseworkers, chaplains, and other mental health and medical health employees.
